Roundhill Ski Field
Ski field of superlatives
The Roundhill ski area is located on the banks of Lake Tekapo and offers some superlatives: The views of New Zealand's highest mountain Aoraki Mount Cook, the longest rope tow in the world called Heritage Express Rope Tow and the longest ski run of New Zealand counted in altitude (783 hm).
Particularly for our team rider Joi, the 1440 m (!) long Heritage Express seemed to take no end. Because of thick upper arms he already had to throw in the towel after the third elevator ride. However, the trials are worth it. The relief was correspondingly great when we were finally allowed to release the steel cable of the Heritage Express.
Once at the top, the breathtaking view over New Zealand's Southern Alps, Lake Tekapo and the Mount Cook Area took our proverbial breath. The backdrop was topped only by the more spectacular terrain, in which we drew endless turns. Together we reached an agreement: The term "gigantic" hits it pretty well for the backcountry of Roundhill!
Roundhill is also one of the few ski resorts in New Zealand that can come up with a snowmaking system. Not only ski tourists from around the world benefit from the extensive snowmaking system, but also numerous national ski teams. Roundhill for example is the seasonal training area of ski stars like Ted Ligety and consorts.
